"But Raphie. We should go back now."
"Don't be such a fun pooper Leo. Master Splinter said we can explore the sewers."
"But Raph, we've been gone for a long time now. It's night and I wanna go back." Leo whined.
They were ten now and Splinter had granted them the freedom of going to explore the sewers without him. As long as they had a buddy with them. Raph insisted on Leo going further and since he didn't want to be alone in the dark sewers at night he followed Raph.
"Hey Leo. Look." Raph pointed at a manhole cover that was slid open slightly. "Come on." Raph began to climb up the latter and pushed with all his might to move the lid so the gap was big enough for them. Leo stood at the bottom of the latter looking up at Raph with uncertainty.
"Raph, I don't think you should go up there."
"Oh your coming with me Leo." Raph jumped down and grabbed hold of Leo's wrist and basically shoved him up the latter.
"Raph, we can't. Splinter said..."
"Leo. Just be quiet about what Splinter said. We're allowed to speak for ourselves you know? Just a little while up on the surface Ok? Five or ten minutes and then we'll go back Ok?" Raph tried to negotiate and he shoved Leo all the way out the hole.
"Hey!" Leo said and Raph climbed up behind him. The alley was dark and Leo ventured around, suddenly curious. "Raph can we go home now?...Raph?"
Leo looked around and found his brother was gone. Leo called his red masked brothers name but got no reply. Leo was getting scared and he walked slowly. An odd feeling crept into his shell and he heard a clang behind him and snapped around to see a trash can had toppled over. Leo began to back away.
Leo jumped and screamed. Raph was laughing at Leo as he ran away. Leo was running towards the street. Raph's heart skipped in his chest. What if he was seen? Raph ran after Leo. Leo was running across the street.
"LEO!! STOP!!" Raph yelled.
Leo stopped on the spot and lost his balance, causing him to fall face first on the black road. Leo stood up and as he got to his feet a light swept over him and a loud noise filled his ears. Leo was frozen on the spot as the large truck came towards him. He screamed as it was about to hit him and the sound of the truck was blocking out Raph's screams.
Pain shot through him as the truck collided with his small body and he was flown back several feet and tumbled on the road. The truck had swerved right after hitting Leo and was now smashed against a telephone pole. Raph ran over to the unmoving body of his brother. Raph saw blood coating Leo's forehead and cuts and scrapes bled freely all over him. Blood was dripping out of the corners of his mouth.
Raph knelt down beside him and lifted leo's head so it was not against the hard road. "Leo?" Raph whispered. "Leo please. You have to wake up. Come on Leo, wake up. I'm...I...I'm sorry. this is all my fault. Please don't die on me Leo. Please, just wake up. Please..." Raph cried.
Raph heard sirens and that meant some person must have reported the crash already. They couldn't be seen. Raph couldn't endanger Leo, Not again. Raph dragged Leo's unmoving body and brought him back to the alley.
"Leo? Leo wake up. This is all my fault. You said don't com up. but I dragged you straight into danger. And now...now your gone. All I want is to hear your voice once more." Raph sobbed, his eyes closed tight. He was too distressed to check for vital signs and he didn't remember how anyways. Right now he believed his brother was dead. Until he felt a hand on his arm. Raph's eyes snapped open and he looked down at Leo to see his eyes slightly open. Though they were glazed with pain.
"Leo!! Your alive!! Oh thank goodness. I thought you were dead. I thought..."
"Raphie?" Leo's voice was weak and filled with pain. But it made Raph stop talking.
"Yeah Leo?" Raph asked.
"Can we go home now Raphie?" Leo whispered roughly.
"Yes Leo. Don't worry. I'll get you home in no time. Everything will be alright." Raph wiped tears from his eyes and picked up Leo. He had a little trouble lifting him but he held Leo close and was determined to bring him home.
"Raphie...I wanna go home now...." Raph could see a tear creep out of Leo's eye and begin to roll down his cheek.
"Don't worry. You'll be home soon. Safe and sound in your own bed. Ok?"
"K...Raphie?" Leo said again.
'What is it Leo?"
Leo coughed. Coughing up some blood in the progress. This sent Raph into a panic.
Leo's face was scrunched up in pain. "It hurts."
"Everything." Leo sobbed.
Raph looked at Leo sadly. Raph had caused this. 'It should be me who's hurt not him. He didn't do anything wrong. It should have been me...' Raph thought to himself.
Raph carried Leo on his back and brought him all the way back to the lair. Leo was out cold by the time they got back. And Raph had thought at first that Leo's heart had stopped but was relieved when he heard Leo let out a soft but rough moan.
"Splinter!! Come Quick!!!" Raph yelled as he ran to the couch with Leo.
Master Splinter appeared in his room door and eyes widened as he saw the blood on Leo's forehead. Now dripped over his closed eyes. "Leonardo!! My son!" Splinter turned to Raph with both worry and anger. "Raphael!! What happened to Leonardo?!"
"Well we were just..."
"Raphael," Splinter sighed. "You went to the surface didn't you."
Raph hung his head in shame. "Yeah...I'm sorry Master Splinter. I just wanted to see, Leo told me not to but I dragged him up anyways."
"Then what happened to him? Why is he so hurt?" Splinter asked.
Raph sighed. Not daring to look Splinter in the eye. "I scared him and he ran out onto that black path. A big metal mechine thing, I think its called a vehicle, at least that's what Donnie says, and it hit him. I'm really sorry...Is he gonna be alright?"
Splinter sighed and looked at his son. "Raphael, now you know why I forbid you to go up their in the first place. It's much too dangerous and your too young to take care of yourselves up there if you manage to get hurt. Or what if you get lost? You know the sewers better than the surface world, it is better to stay down here."
"Yes Master, I see that now...." Raph said quietly.
Donnie and Mikey were looking at the scene play in front of them as they peeked up from the couch.
"What's wrong with Leo? Is he sleeping?" Mikey asked curiously.
"I don't think so Mikey. Can't you see the blood on him?" Donnie whispered.
Mikey looked closer and saw it. "you don't think they were fighting again do you?"
"I don't think. Master Splinter doesn't seem that angry. But I bet he isn't too happy either."
"Is Leo going to be alright Donnie?" Mikey asked.
"Mikey...stop asking all these questions. I wasn't there so how would I know the answers?"
"But you know everything..." Mikey said quietly.
"Mikey how many times have I gone over this. I don't know everything happening in the world. I'm smart when it comes to science and stuff but I really don't know what happened to Leo."
"Oh....Ok." Mikey sighed.
Splinter heard them and looked over to see Donnie and Mikey peeking over the couch at them. Splinter turned to Raphael. "Why don't you take your brothers and go play somewhere else. I will care for Leonardo."
Raph bowed. "Hai Sensei."
Raph went over to his younger brothers and brought them away from Splinter and Leo. Raph was pelted with questions about what happened and the only reply he said was "I made a big mistake..."
